TWO
VOLUNTEERS CHANGED THE FUTURE FOR KIDS
Castle Pines Village
Reporter, Fall 2007
Two long-time Castle Pines
residents are being recognized for their
service to at-risk youth of Douglas County.
Cheryl Bumgarner and Linda Hanson have
served on the Douglas County Partners’
Advisory Board helping to raise awareness,
and funds, for this exceptional
organization.
Partners, a youth
mentoring organization, began helping kids
in our County in 2001. Youth (Junior
Partners) are referred to the program from
the schools, juvenile diversion, and other
human service agencies. The goal is to match

with an adult volunteer mentor called a
Senior Partner.
Cheryl Bumgarner was a founding Advisory
Board member and one of the first Senior
Partners (volunteer mentor). She has
been matched with Robert since January 2002.
He graduated from High School this year and
will attend Metro State College in the
spring. Bumgarner has helped the
organization flourish by serving as Advisory
Board Chair and as Co-chair of the annual
fundraising event twice. She has recruited
many Board members and Senior Partners over
the last six years.
Linda Hanson has been on the Advisory
Board since 2004 and Chaired the Cocktail
Buffet three times. Her exceptional
fundraising skills have directly benefited
Douglas County youth. Hanson has also
recruited Board members, mentors, and
committee members, and has helped increase
awareness throughout the community.
Douglas County Partners, a nonprofit
organization, is successfully helping
at-risk youth reduce troublesome behavior
and improve self-esteem through mentoring.
National statistics and research clearly
show that mentoring works by reducing bad
behavior while greatly enhancing a young
person’s prospects for leading a healthy and
productive life.
Volunteer mentors are always needed.

“I really needed
someone in my life that was just for me. I was nervous
when we first met, but she was really cool and awesome.
Our first activity was a Partnership picnic and we had
such a good time. I trusted her right away and felt so
close to her.” |
